  Advantages and disadvantages of cnc process

  

  CNC is one of the most advanced processes for producing hardware products at present. Its advantages mainly include many types of hardware materials that can be used, less material waste during production, fast mass production, and low cost.

  

  The disadvantage is mainly from efficiency. First, the production cycle is long and the cost is high. As a result, CNC has to produce a certain amount of hardware products to have economic benefits, which is not suitable for small batch production. Second, molding has limitations. Some shapes can lead to the situation that the mold cannot be removed, which limits the product design. Third, the iteration cost is high. After modifying the product design, the corresponding production mold also needs to be modified, which will require new costs and time. Therefore, iterations are generally only carried out when the set of molds has achieved economic benefits. In order to achieve economic benefits, it must be produced to a certain amount after starting up, which will cause inventory costs.

  

  CNC machining can be more expensive than other technologies, such as 3D printing, for single-piece or very low-volume production runs. Nonetheless, CNC machining is cost-effective for higher volumes. Subtractive methods create more waste, while 3D printing uses only the materials needed.

  

  Pros and cons of metal 3D printing

  

  The advantages of metal 3D printing are that there is no need for molds, and there are few restrictions on the molding structure. It can give full play to the advantages of design and topology optimization, optimize the structure of the product, and achieve the same or better mechanical properties with less material. The cost of metal 3D printing has little correlation with the complexity of the parts. For example, for a complex part, the cost will increase geometrically when using cnc, while the cost of metal 3D printing will not increase geometrically, and multiple parts can also be integrated into one. The whole is printed out in one piece, reducing the later assembly time. Metal 3D printing supports iteration better as no molds are required. In addition, metal 3D printing can be produced on demand, making as much as needed, reducing inventory pressure and making production more flexible.

  

  The disadvantage of metal 3D printing is that the speed of mass production is not fast enough. When the production quantity exceeds a certain amount, the efficiency of metal 3D printing becomes inefficient. If metal 3D printing and CNC are likened to runners, metal 3D printing is a sprinter, and CNC is a long-distance runner. The second is that the types of materials that can be used are much less than cnc. Third, the surface quality is average, and post-processing is often required to improve the surface quality.
